Barranquilla Carnival:
Master Project

Colombia’s Carnival of Barranquilla is the second largest carnival in South America and was awarded ‘Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’ in 2008 by UNESCO. However, its name is not well known worldwide.
The intentions behind this project were to develop a new identity to promote the Barranquilla Carnival for international consumers supported by a benchmarking study of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival and Barranquilla. This study analysed the digital channels used as part of each carnival.
The outcome was found to be a new identity system which included a brand manual, applications, animations, social media profile design and website layout. This was revised and tested by two members, one in Colombia and one in Germany, in order to have validation in terms of design and communication from both a local and international perspective.
